AMSC has entered into an agreement with ComEd, a northern Illinois utility, to deploy an HTS system to improve grid resilience. The project is structured as a cost-sharing arrangement among AMSC, ComEd and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The agreement between AMSC and ComEd, which includes commercial terms, remains subject to DHS approval. The system will feature AMSC's Amperium® wire that will be installed along with other sub-system design elements. This will allow ComEd to move power around its urban substations for improved grid resilience. This, currently, is not possible without high-temperature superconductivity. It is expected that the cable will become a permanent component of ComEd's grid.
