The International Energy Agency (IEA) High Temperature Superconductivity (HTS) TCP and the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) TCP are pleased to invite you to a joint event exploring how smart grid approaches and superconducting technologies can jointly contribute to power systems transformation. The workshop will take place online on 21 April 2026, from 13:00 to 16:00 CEST

Power systems worldwide are undergoing rapid change, driven by increasing shares of variable renewable energy, electrification of end-use sectors, and growing demands on system reliability, efficiency and resilience. In this context, smart grids and superconductivity represent complementary technological pillars: smart grids provide the digital, operational and system-level frameworks needed to manage complexity, while HTS materials offer transformative potential for power networks through a more efficient high-capacity transmission, reducing congestion and eliminating resistive losses.

The event will provide a forum to:

  • discuss key challenges facing power grids in the energy transition,
  • examine the potential role of superconducting technologies within evolving smart grid architectures,
  • reflect on how closer collaboration between TCPs can strengthen coherence and impact across IEA technology activities.

The programme will combine strategic reflections and technical insights, with the objective of identifying common priorities and opportunities for future cooperation between ISGAN and HTS within the IEA TCP framework. Please find the agenda HERE.

We would be pleased to welcome your participation in this joint exchange.
