Technologies
One of the most promising sectors for widespread utilization of HTS technologies is the electric power industry. Superconductor-based devices do not simply provide improvements over conventional electric grid technologies; they provide unique solutions to challenges that cannot be achieved otherwise. HTS wire and cryogenic systems are the underlying technology that enable a number of electric power applications. Examples of the applications that provide these unique solutions include:
- High-capacity power cables
- Superconducting fault current limiters
- Generators for offshore wind turbines
- Superconducting magnetic energy storage
- Transformers
There are a number of technical terms related to high temperature superconductivity. A glossary is available to help better understand these terms.
While there are a number of HTS applications for the electric power sector, there are many other applications outside of the grid space.
